Abstract

Join us for a conversation about diversity in tech, focusing on gender and sexuality in Silicon Valley. We'll explore challenges women and LGBTQ people face in the field, and discuss what we as HCI educators, researchers, and professionals can do to address these challenges. Before joining us on Thursday, please take a some time to look over a few short articles:

  • Out in Tech by Molly Brown: http://www.geekwire.com/2015/out-in-tech-what-its-like-to-be-lgbt-in-an-industry-struggling-with-diversity/
  • What it's like to be a lesbian in tech by Shalene Gupta: http://fortune.com/2015/03/12/lesbians-in-tech/
  • Reflecting on One Very, Very Strange Year at Uber by Susan J Fowler: https://www.susanjfowler.com/blog/2017/2/19/reflecting-on-one-very-strange-year-at-uber
  • Now We Have Data on the Ridiculous, Sometimes Dangerous Sexism in Tech by Kimberly Weisul: http://www.inc.com/kimberly-weisul/totally-unacceptable-environment-women-tech.html

These pieces are intended as a conversation starter -- please come prepared to discuss them if you can, but all are welcome to join the conversation.
