Data analysis remains organized around fixed workspaces in which displays, computation, and input have been configured in advance. Ubiquitous Analytics asks how people can work with data wherever questions arise, including in physical settings where analysis becomes part of an ongoing activity. In these live environments, the interface may be absent, constrained, or fragmented across devices. Supporting sensemaking under these conditions requires systems that can configure the relationship among data, its visual representation, available forms of interaction, and the surrounding environment.
This dissertation develops a resource-centered account of analytical interaction in live environments. The central claim is that an analytical interface can be formed in situ by configuring where visual representations and interaction capabilities reside: within physical artifacts, through portable systems brought into the environment, or across devices already present in the space. The work frames physical computing as a means of establishing relationships among people, data, and their surroundings.
Under constrained computational and display resources, 'Sensemaking Sans Power' embeds operations such as filtering, revealing details, and changing views within color-changing physical materials. 'VisTorch' brings portable display and interaction capabilities into environments where dedicated analytical infrastructure may be unavailable or impractical, using handheld projection to create, arrange, and share situated visualizations across physical surfaces. In display-rich environments where interaction is fragmented across devices, 'Datamancer' uses bimanual interaction to acquire screens and filter, move, place, or inspect visualizations across them, supporting analytical work for individual and collaborative settings. Through these systems, the dissertation examines how analytical interaction can be established when the resources required to work with data reside in or are brought into different parts of the environment.
Biswaksen Patnaik is a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at the University of Maryland, College Park. He works with Dr. Huaishu Peng in the Small Artifacts Lab and Dr. Niklas Elmqvist through the Center for Anytime Anywhere Analytics. His research lies broadly in human-computer interaction, with a focus on designing interactive systems that support data interaction and sensemaking beyond conventional desktop environments. His work spans physical and ubiquitous computing, situated visualization, and interaction across devices and environments. Outside of research, he enjoys good coffee and spending time with his cat.
